The excess weight has reached epidemic proportions in the world with more than 1 billion adults suffering from increased weight or obesity. Children and adolescents obesity is 2-3 times more common than 30 years ago.
In 460-370 B. C. the prominent physician Hippocrates said: “Let your food be your first medicine!”
Therefore, looking at people, we can truly say – you are what you eat. Every human body is composed of nutrients, which are absorbed from the food (fats, proteins, carbohydrates, water, vitamins, minerals). 55-70% of the body weight is water (therefore, it is very important to take in fluid every day, because it is the next need after air), up to 20-30% is fat, but 20% is protein (especially the muscles), some carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. Every living organism needs water and nutrients to live. Each cell and organ of the human body are influenced by the food that the person eats (1). Food affects both the blood vessels and hormones, and the mood, and many other important processes.
METABOLISM AND FACTORS INFLUENCING IT
Metabolism is a life-supporting set of chemical reactions that takes place in every living organism. The human brain via hormones "gives orders" to cells how to use calories - consume them fast or use slowly and preserve (2).
People have different metabolic rate at different age. Young children, teens and young adults are higher in kilocalories (kcal) consumption compared to adults, because their growth and development process is intensive. The older a person becomes, the slower his or her metabolism gets.
The body composition differences are associated also with genetic hereditary factors and gender differences. Since men have more muscle compared with women, they have a higher metabolism rate. Women accumulate weight faster because they have a higher body fat content, which is physiologically necessary for them during pregnancy and lactation (2,3).
Adipose tissues accumulate fat and serve as a source of energy for other tissues. Metabolism is also affected by any long-term low-calorie diet and prolonged fasting. Fasting slows down metabolism, therefore, the body becomes frugal. In these situations, the body does not know the true reason of losing weight and starts to protect itself against hunger. When the fasting is discontinued and the previous amount of food is consumed, the body weight increases rapidly. Hormonal disbalance and the use of certain medications have also been mentioned as influential factors (4).
THE WAYS TO ACCELERATE METABOLISM
One of the best ways to improve the metabolism is physical activities. Sport activities improve not only the metabolism, but increase heart stamina and prevent heart diseases.  Low intensity, but frequent and regular physical activities can have a  better effect than a spontaneous and super intense session in a fitness club.
The fact that active sport promotes appetite, as well as the fact that sportsmen want to reward themselves after work well-done with a treat, stimulate the weight maintenance or even increase. People do not realize that they burn a 200-300 kcal in an hour, and it is similar to or even less than are in a one sizeable bun.
People, in  hope to lose the extra weight, usually start to attend high-intensity sessions hoping for a quicker effect. However, low-and moderate-load training, such as cycling, pilates, dance, aerobics, walking and jogging at a moderate pace are better for slimming. Muscles are heavier than fat, pay less attention to your weight fluctuations, but more to the circumference and size (5,6,7)!
EATING AFTER WORKOUT
The main problems of different workouts are as follows:
  1. eating more than required (especially, if during exercises only sugar reserves are used, and hypoglycemia causes increased appetite!) than in the absence of exercises at all,
  2. eating less than required,
  3. eating untimely (8).
Aerobic/cardio/stretching load (fat burning mode)
It is advisable to eat only after about 60-90 minutes to shake up the fat burning wave better, and then eat a little portion of protein and starch-containing food, but not later than at 8 p.m., because the body will have difficulties to digest it.
Anaerobic/force-load exercise (muscle-building mode)
These loads physically worn out muscle fibers, even tear them apart and you have only about 1 hour after your workout to bring them back by giving amino acids, glucose and other nutrients, such as the trace element potassium, which is in high concentration in bananas. If you miss this time, the chances of muscles to restore themselves completely are rather small. What exactly should you eat? Protein-containing products (not powder!), such as lean meat, fish, eggs, cottage cheese, milk, buttermilk and starchy food - bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, buckwheat, porridge and so on. Of course, do not forget vegetables.
In both modes
It is better to choose fruits with less fructose and more glucose, or even starch - bananas, apricots, plums, melon, raspberries. Control the consumption of such fruits as persimmons, watermelons, apples, pears because they contain a lot of fructose, 80% of which is converted to the body fat.
WATER
Water is the most important component in the body's metabolism. Water performs transportation functions (blood, urine, faeces) and serves as a lubricant (gastrointestinal tract, lungs, skin, muscles, brain, joints etc.). It serves as the environment where microscopic, but so important cells live. Water also regulates body temperature - similar to the cooling system in cars. Sometimes thirst is interpreted as hunger. With a lot of liquid, you may not feel hunger for a long time, because the stomach is full with water. It sends "fullness" signals to the brain. So, if you feel hungry and it is not eating time, drink water! After enhanced degradation of fats, a lot of metabolic end-products remain in the body like ash remains after firewood burning in the furnace! So, making it easier for kidneys to remove them, a use of water needs to be increased during a weight losing process.
Experts recommend to use ~ 1.5 liters of water a day. Daily required amount of liquid can be calculated by the following formula: 30 ml multiplied by your body weight. You should not drink more than half a liter of water at once. The amount of water that should be taken depends on the diet (9,10). When eating meat, fish, eggs, plenty of candy, canned food drink water as much as possible, because these products have a lot of different processing "poison" that can be dissolved only in water. If you are using a lot of vegetables and fruit, drink less. It is believed that if you feel the thirst, it means that the body already lacks 2 cups of water.
FREQUENT MEALS
The metabolic rate increases dramatically during a meal as 10% of the daily consumed energy are used directly for the food intake process. It is highly recommended to eat your breakfast because it is a good start for the metabolic processes. During the day, the person must have 3 meals and 2 snack times: it will allow metabolism to stay active (11).
CONTRAST SHOWER, BATH, MASSAGE
Sudden changes of external temperature increase the metabolic rate. Always end your showering with cold water: the metabolic rate rises because the body must warm up again. Therefore, a contrast shower is recommended. The bath procedures, in their turn, increase cellular activity, stimulate metabolism and promote the release of metabolic waste with sweat. Any type of massage also improves blood circulation in the tissues and accelerates metabolism of the body (12).

FRESH AIR
The sunlight positively affects people's overall health and mood, which consequently increases the activity and metabolic rate. Oxygen promotes subcutaneous fat depletion.

USE OF MEDICINAL PLANTS AND NATURAL SUBSTANCES
There are many natural substances described in the literature and scientific studies, which have a positive effect on metabolic processes (e.g. grapefruit, chromium, vitamin B6, omega 3 fatty acids etc.). Attention should be paid to the natural bounded caffeine, which is in the green tea extract: it speeds up your metabolism by 10 to 15%. Green tea extract has intensifying effect on metabolism, leading to greater fat release from adipose tissue and involving it in fat oxidation processes, thus liberating a lot of energy. Green tea extract helps the body to use the internal energy reserves better. In addition to these positive effects, green tea reduces appetite and acts as a potent antioxidant, and improves the vascular system state (13).  Guarana extract, in turn, reduces appetite and craving for sweets, while stimulating body's metabolic processes. Thus, it helps to "burn" the accumulated fat, using it as a source of energy for he body cells and tissues (14).
